What is baptism?
Baptism is a Christian sacrament marked by the use of water. The water signifies a person’s identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. It is an act commanded by Christ in Matthew 28 and through the water and Word, baptism is a bearer of God’s promise. Baptism is the celebration of the person’s entry into Christ and into the Body of Christ (Christian community). It is truly God’s gift, drawing us into Christ’s church and bestowing upon us forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life. In it, we are marked by the cross of Christ forever. So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:26-29
When should I have my child baptized?
Parents traditionally have their child baptized from the first days of birth through the first year. There is not an exact timeframe in which to have your child baptized. Sometimes, family traditions or life’s circumstances will help decide when a child is baptized. Most parents find it easier to have their child baptized sooner rather than later. Sometimes, due to life’s circumstances, a child is not baptized until they are older. It is never too late to be baptized. Remember, all of us are the children of a loving and merciful God.
Who should be the sponsors or godparents?
When choosing sponsors or godparents, think about person(s) who will help you raise your child in his/her faith life. Think about a person who would help celebrate your child’s baptismal day each year, assist with answering those difficult faith questions, be there for your child’s faith milestones (i.e. first communion, confirmation), and listen to and pray for your child.
Do I need to attend a baptism workshop?
It is recommended, especially for families who have not attended a baptism workshop, that parents attend the workshop prior to the baptism. The workshop discusses the basics of baptism and why we baptize as well as how to raise your child “wet” (meaning to live as one who is baptized). There is also time to answer questions and concerns about the baptism day itself and how it will be a part of the worship service.
Should sponsors or family members attend the workshop?
Sponsors, family members and friends are encouraged to attend the baptism workshop, especially if they have questions or concerns.
When are the baptism workshops and how long do they last?
The baptism workshops are currently held on the second Sunday of the month from 10:10 – 11:00 a.m. except for the months of March/April (depending on Easter), July and December. They usually last approximately 45-60 minutes. No registration is required.
Is Childcare Provided?
Childcare is provided in the church nursery during the baptism workshop as well as during the worship services.
When are baptisms offered?
Baptisms are offered during the three worship services – Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. and Sundays at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Baptisms can be scheduled for most weekends. Baptisms are also scheduled for the Easter Vigil worship. Baptisms are not scheduled on the first weekend of the month, Palm Sunday Weekend, Easter Sunday, Confirmation Weekend, All Saints Weekend, and other weekends as appropriate to theme and liturgical season. For more specific details, contact Andrea Fluegel.
Can I have a “private” baptism?
Since baptism is a celebration of a person coming into the Body of Christ within the context of the gathered community of faith, Roseville Lutheran Church encourages baptisms to be a part of the worship services. Due to health concerns and other circumstances, a baptism during worship services may not be possible. Please contact Andrea Fluegel or Pastor David Watson to discuss this option.
How do I schedule a baptism?
Please fill out our online baptism registration form to schedule your baptism. We will respond to you shortly after you complete the form.
When does the baptism information form need to be completed?
The Baptism Information Form needs to be completed and received in the church office at least two weeks prior to the baptism date.
Can I schedule a baptism before my child is born?
Yes. A baptism can be scheduled before a child is born. When completing the form online, please enter Boy/Girl for the first name and today’s date for the birthdate. We recommend that parents contact the church as soon as possible with the child’s name, birth date, and city/state of birth as soon as the child is born in order for the church to complete the necessary information in preparation for the baptism.
Can my child be baptized at RLC if I am not a member?
Yes. We welcome all to become baptized that wish to do so. Once a person has been baptized at Roseville Lutheran Church he/she becomes a “member.” It is not uncommon for a child to be baptized and become a member before the parents have become members through a transfer of membership, reaffirmation, or by baptism.
Can I be baptized with my child?
Absolutely. If you have not been baptized and are ready to become a part of the faith community, we encourage you to share a baptismal day with your child.
What if my child is not an infant?
If your child is pre-school age, we encourage you to attend the baptism workshop and complete a baptism information form. If your child is school-aged, we recommend that the parent and the child attend the baptism workshop together and complete a baptism information form. If your child is currently participating in confirmation or of confirmation age or a high school student, we recommend that you contact Pastor David Watson to discuss the baptism with you and your child as well to schedule the baptism.
Can I get baptized as an adult?
Yes, if you have not been previously baptized. Please contact Pastor David Watson to discuss the baptism as well to schedule the baptism.
What if I have other questions?
If you have additional questions, please contact Angela Paige.
