Contentment does not mean that you are indifferent to your circumstances. It means that you are not controlled by your circumstances.
This is a 4-week series on contentment. We will see that one can move from anger to peace, from frustration to satisfaction, and from anxiety to trust.

Learning to be Content
December 3
From a prison in Rome Paul writes to the church at Philippi to encourage them to rejoice in the Lord and not to be anxious about anything. He adds: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need. I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, well fed or hungry, living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” We move forward as we:
- gratefully savor the blessings of Christ
- think about and choose the good things
- find the secret of the sufficiency is in Christ
How to Handle the Blessings of God
December 10
In 62 AD Paul, still in prison, writes to his “son in the faith”, Timothy an epistle that would close in what could bring contentment. He writes in the sixth chapter: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world and can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap … For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” He adds: “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love endurance and gentleness. Be rich in godliness.”

December 17
The last chapter of Hebrews continues with the theme of money or lack of it. Verse 5 is a command: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.”
In comparing with others:
Position – the hardship of many
Wealth – those that have less than you
Christ – as he lived on this earth
Once was – we brought nothing into this world
Will be – all possessions will be left behind
Verse 5b is a promise: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”
If God is not enough for us, then nothing or no one will be enough. Let us dwell on the joy and peace He has given.
