I Am RLC: Erik Storlie

Posted on

"I Am RLC" is an on-going story series that, over time, will give glimpses of who we are as individuals within the community of Roseville Lutheran Church. Periodically we'll learn from members, friends, and staff about what is important to them, what draws them here, and why they are engaged with and support the RLC community.

I am RLC: Erik Storlie

Physician familiar with crucial conversations and aging parents

How many years have you been a member of Roseville Lutheran Church (RLC)?

My wife, Trupti, and I have been members for eight years.

What initially brought you to RLC?

John Helgen is married to my first cousin, Robin. When we moved to Shoreview from Minneapolis, we were excited to be so close to John's church.

How are you currently involved at RLC?

Our daughters, Priva (8) and Asha (6), are involved in Cornerstone and the children's choir. I enjoy the 10:10 Adult Education topics, and participate in Mission and Outreach/Family Serve organized by the church.

How do you live out the RLC mission: Love God, love your neighbor?

RLC's Mission and Outreach group has helped us understand the many needs in the local Roseville community, and introduced us to unique organizations doing great work to support our neighbors. We've gotten directly involved with RLC's local mission partners in the community to make a difference in Roseville. I am a doctor and when I am at work, I try hard to really listen to my patients and their families; I'm still surprised by how grateful people are for this small act of caring.

What is one ministry that is really memorable to you?

The book study that we did at RLC a few years ago, It All Goes Back in the Box, was particularly memorable. The small group discussion changed our perspective on things and money by helping us be more grateful for the true gifts in our lives. The small group was a great way to get to know other RLC members too.

Where is your favorite place to volunteer and why?

Through RLC and as a family - Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is our favorite volunteer place. Our kids enjoy these experiences as activities and it promotes giving back. In the community, donating blood to Red Cross is important to me because I see the ongoing need.

What was the most meaningful gift you've ever given or received?

My mom died recently, and she loved the farm with forests where she lived in Southeastern Minnesota. For Christmas this year, my brother made a bench from walnut cut on the farm. It's one of the coolest gifts I've received.

What would you do if you had three wishes?

I'll take two wishes: I would wish for cures to cancer and Alzheimer's. My dad died from cancer and my mom from dementia. At work, I see the effects of these diseases daily, and would love to have better answers for patients and their families.

What super power would you have if you were a superhero?

Fly.

What is your favorite place in the Twin Cities and why?

My favorite place in the Twin Cities is Lake Owasso. We like to swim, wake surf, and just cruise on the lake. We've had great times with family and friends on Owasso.

If you could take a trip to anywhere, where would you go?

I would go sailing with my family. Sailing the Adriatic off Croatia is supposed to beautiful.

What was your favorite toy growing up?

My favorite toy was a BMX dirt bike with mag rims. Blue and yellow. It was AWESOME!

Just for Fun
