Darlyne was the daughter of the late John W. and Ruth (Nordlund) Sands of Alvarado, MN where she also grew up. She loved riding horse out at the family farm and having her grandpa come into town by horse drawn sleigh to get her for Christmas. Darlyne graduated H.S. as the Co-Valedictorian and went to college at UND; was elected to: Grey Gowns, Mortar Board, Pi Lambda Theta, Sigma Alpha Iota and Kappa Alpha Theta. After graduation, she taught Music, English and History in Lancaster, Little Falls, Carlton (all MN) and Costa Mesa, CA. Living in California was a highlight since she got to dance to the Big Bands and Frank Sinatra.

Darlyne married Edward D. Magnuson in Little Falls, MN on February 9, 1946. 3 days after their marriage, Ed was deployed to serve in the Korean War for 1 year. Before moving to St. Anthony Village, the family resided 9 years in Forest Lake where Darlyne was a H.S. substitute teacher, Sunday School teacher, and used her musical talents as the Director for the Sr. Choir and Women’s Chorus at Faith Lutheran Church.

After Ed’s death in 1969, Darlyne moved to Golden Valley and applied her skills at Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent) as an Agents’ Supplies Supervisor. She retired after 17 years of dedicated service. She then traveled extensively in the U.S., Europe and enjoyed several cruises. Her passion for playing tennis continued with the Metro Sr. Tennis Club until she was 80. Later, Darlyne moved to Roseville and was an active member of the Roseville Lutheran Church and the Rebeccah Circle. At 91, she returned to St. Anthony Village living at Chandler Place for 4 years. She enjoyed many provided activities and kept her new friends and staff on their toes with her quick wit and humor!

Darlyne is survived by her: daughters, Marlene (Ray) Gravlin, Marsha Magnuson; son, Bruce (Mona) Magnuson; grandchildren, Ryan (Diana) Fakler, Brandon Fakler, Natalie Magnuson, Ashley Magnuson; great grandchildren, Chase, Keegan and Lauren Fakler; brother, Wendell (Michal) Sands; nephew, Jared (Robbyne) Sands; nieces, Stephanie Sands, Karmen (Joe) Schuster, Monica (Corey) Jamiesen; 16 great nephews, nieces and many cousins who will also miss her. Throughout her life, she remained active, caring, and resourceful; loved learning and sharing what she learned (still being a teacher).
