Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Matthew 14:22-33
Karen Rogers

Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus.

This passage tells the story of the disciples being in the boat while Jesus was off praying.  Think about a time in your life when you decided to follow Jesus. In your heart and mind you think, “I WILL follow you, Lord, no matter what.” It sounds easy, doesn’t it. But what happens when the storms of life come up and your world starts to rock and shake? Do you remain confident? Or do you cry out in fear? Are you more like Peter who says, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you.” Or are you more like the disciples, who remain in the boat hoping to do as little as possible so nothing further rocks the boat.

While some believe Peter lacked faith, I’m actually inspired by Peter. He was willing to stand up and take a step toward Jesus. Even though he started to sink, Jesus was right there to catch him. In the same way, Jesus is there for you and me, too.  He wants you to stand up and boldly take a step toward him, not just when it’s easy, but through all your storms in life. Jesus promises to be right there for you and he reminds you he truly is the Son of God.

Questions for reflection:

  • Who are you more like? Peter, who stepped out on the water, or the disciples who remained in the boat?

  • In what way is Jesus asking you to step out on the water and walk toward Him?

Prayer:

Lord, no matter what storm I’m facing, help me to focus on confidently getting up and taking a step toward you. Amen.
