Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Matthew 18:15-20
Merle Gaedy

"Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

As I read this passage I think of forgiveness, honesty, and integrity.  As you sin against others or they sin against you it is important to be aware of the sin, then repent or forgive. We do not want to "bind" or take that sin with us to heaven. Here on Earth everyone sins, but to maintain a healthy heart and a clean conscience everyone should realize their sins and ask for forgiveness. We should work together as a family, as a friend, as a congregation to realize our sins and ask for forgiveness.

Questions for reflection:

  • How often do you discuss sins or forgiveness with your closest friends, family, or pastor?

  • When and how often do you ask for forgiveness?

  • Has not being willing to forgive ever caused you stress or illness?

Prayer:

God help us be fully aware of the sins that we have committed against ourselves, against others, and against you so that we may come together as one and ask for forgiveness. Bring us closer to each other, clear our conscience and grow our hearts as we together get closer to you and your word. Amen.
