Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Matthew 20:1-16
Georgia Nygaard

"So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Really?!  Common sense tells us that those who work more hours doing the same task should receive more pay than those that just worked for one hour.  This does not seem fair. Where is the justice?

What is God‘s message in this parable?  Is it not human nature to want to elevate oneself over other people; to be first and gain prestige; to receive all the admiration and benefits that society offers?  We live in a capitalistic society where making money is important. Our philosophy becomes self-serving. Greed takes over and greed is like a cancer; it destroys.

Did not the landowner make an agreement with the laborers for one denarius?  The landowner showed compassion for the men standing around idle. He was generous with his money in providing work and compensation for the idle men.  Initially, the men seemed grateful for the opportunity to work and earn money; however, the first ones hired felt they should receive more. The landowner did not have to share his wealth; however, he had compassion and cared for them.

How does this parable apply to us today?  Jesus Christ came to save his children regardless of how long they have known him; regardless of how virtuous they are.  There is no discrepancy between the rich and the poor, the famous or unknown. God pours out love for all of us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.  This is the ultimate gift.  This same gift of salvation is given to all who believe.  We are saved by God’s grace; this is not something we earn through our diligence.  Should we not feel humbled by God’s generosity; by his love and mercy?

Generosity destroys greed and animosity.  God lived among us and showed us through his example that the greatest in the kingdom of God must be a servant; thus, we are called to  “Love God, Love Neighbor.”

Questions for reflection:

  • What is at the core of generosity?

  • How does one become less self-serving?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your divine love and mercy.  Guide us as we seek to become more compassionate, grateful and generous.  Help us to love one another. Amen.
