Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Wednesday, April 3

Wednesday April 3
Matthew 16:13-20
Rachel Dickinsen

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”  He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

"Who do you say I am?” Jesus’ question to his disciples is a question for all of us. It’s a question we all grapple with daily. Who do you say Jesus is? I know, for me, this question could also be phrased as, "What kind of Jesus is convenient for me in this moment?"

"Who do you say that I am?” Someone who had some good things to say, but not everything applies to me and how I want to live my life.

"Who do you say that I am?" Someone who I take for granted. Someone who I will call on in my time of need, but who I don’t recognize in other aspects of my life.

"Who do you say that I am?" Someone who I simply don’t have time for. I’m way too busy as it is and, besides, I’m doing just fine on my own.

“Who do say that I am?” This simple question suddenly puts everything into perspective for us. This question can be something we ask ourselves throughout the day as we re-focus on what’s important — Jesus as our Messiah.

Questions for reflection:

  • Who do you say Jesus is?

  • Does your answer change in your day-to-day life?

Prayer:

Dear God, Forgive me for the times that I have denied you and help me to daily confess you as my Lord, my Savior. Amen.
