Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Matthew 5:1-16
Pam McCulloch

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven."

Jesus began his Sermon on the Mount by teaching his disciples about what it means to be blessed.  He said we are blessed when life is difficult, blessed when there is injustice, blessed in times of joy. We receive these blessings and are welcomed into the kingdom of heaven.  Then, once we understand how we have been blessed, we are called to pass on these blessings to others. Jesus tells us we are to be salt of the earth, the foundation of our good works.  And like our Savior Jesus Christ we are to be light; to show God’s love in all that we do. To be his bright light and share the blessings we have been given.

I remember singing “This Little Light of Mine” as a child.  We were to let our light shine all around the neighborhood; don’t hide it under a bushel; don’t let Satan blow it out. We don’t let anything get in the way of our light which is in Jesus Christ.  This week, let the good works you share with others, be the light of the world.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How have you been blessed to be a blessing to others?

  • Where will you shine your light today?

Prayer:

Thank you God for the blessings you have given us. May these blessings be your light that shines in the lives of all your children.  Amen.
