Lenten Devotional – The Wise Still Seek Jesus

Matthew 13:24-43
Lon Erickson

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!

The parable of weeds intentionally sown among the recently planted wheat, should have painted a clear picture to Jesus’ listeners.  Still, an interpretation by Jesus was needed. While Jesus explained the parable clearly, a subtle, yet important, aspect is the fact that owner of the wheat field needed to exercise patience. This reinforces two facts.  First, that God has infinite patience. Second, that we, as represented in the parable by the servants who suggested immediately removing the weeds, do not. As I reflect on this point, I recalled my own struggles with impatience when I was young as I waited for permission to open my presents at Christmas.

God certainly wants us to be with Him and he gives us every opportunity to come to Him. He provides us direction and encouragement through prayer, studying the Bible and our religious community and leaders. As this parable indicates, God continues to be patient with us even though we don’t always “take a hint.” As I pondered this scripture I realized that while we have no control over decisions to be made in the end, we certainly should faithfully try follow the path that God has patiently laid out for us.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Reflect on a time when you reacted impatiently.  What were the consequences?

  • What might have been a better response?

Prayer:

Lord, please forgive my impulsive behavior and continue to show me the path you have patiently prepared for me. In Jesus name, Amen.
