John 19:25-27
Friday, March 30

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son." And to his disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, the disciple took her into his home. – John 19:25-27 (NIV)

"The disciple whom he loved." I have always wondered why John used that description. Why not use the first person and say me or use the third person and say John? It seems rather cocky or arrogant.

Yet I remember a conversation my sisters and I had after my father died. I am the oldest of four girls and after mom and the four of us had met with the pastor to plan dad's funeral, we were sitting talking. One of my sisters said, "You know, Dad and I always had a special relationship, we..." Another sister chimed in, "Dad and I had a special relationship, we..." The third sister added, "Dad and I had a special relationship, we..." then I replied, "Dad and I had a special relationship, we..."

I realized that each of us had a very special relationship with our Dad and there was no competition. we each felt special and loved. I think that is why John used the phrase "the disciple whom Jesus loved." I believe that Jesus had a special relationship with each disciple and loved each of them.

I also believe that He wants to have a special relationship with each of us and loves each of us deeply. But, relationships take two to make them work. We need to respond to Him and His love.

Questions for reflection:

  • How would you describe your relationship with Jesus?
  • What might you do to improve your relationship with Jesus?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I want to be in a special relationship with you. I want to grow in your love and care. Help me to do this. In your Name I pray. Amen
