John 19:28-30
Saturday, March 31

28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), "I am thirsty." 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. – John 19:28-30

I deeply believe that God came into this world in the flesh of Jesus to make God known; that the primary work of Jesus was to be the very presence of God.

The two statements by Jesus in this text: "I am thirsty," and "It is finished," speak of the eager desire of Jesus to move on "down the road" now that his earthly ministry has been completed, to his resurrection and ascension.

Yes, in the ever changing chapters of our life, we too travel "down the road" and must face times of saying "I am thirsty" and "It is finished."

My wife Carolyn and I have recently faced these questions. At age 80, we moved from our beloved home of 45 years to a two bedroom apartment. Our time there was "finished." Our house was sold to a young couple with two children, we are very thankful, and we are also "thirsty" for what lies ahead.

In the struggles of our life, we will continue to hope and pray and trust that where Jesus is, there we will be also.

Questions for reflection:

  • What chapter of your life are in now?
  • Is there anything "finished" in this chapter, and do you feel a "thirst" to move on?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, give me the courage to face the road "down the road" always. Amen
