John 14:25-27
Thursday, March 15

25 "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." – John 14:25-27 (NIV)

At a recent conference with our 3-year old son's preschool teacher, she shared that she had overheard him and a young friend having an interesting conversation. At one point, the friend asked, "Where is God?" and placing his hand on his chest, our son replied matter-of-factly, "He's here."

As parents we're often so focused on teaching our little ones what's what, it's easy to miss those moments when they have something big to teach us. In this case, a beautiful reminder of a simple truth – that God the Father sent his Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts, to bring us peace that surpasses all understanding, and to calm whatever troubles or fears the world can dish out.

Being prone to stress and worry as I am, I can't count how many times in a day I need to be reminded of the awesome gift of peace we carry within us. Do not let your hearts be troubled! Do not be afraid! He's here.

Questions for reflection:

  • When have you felt most connected to the peace Jesus describes in these verses?
  • What fears and troubles can you trade for peace today?

Prayer:

Father God, when I'm distracted by fears and troubles of this world, thank you for reminding me of the heavenly peace I carry within my heart. Amen
