John 16:22

22 So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. – John 16:22

I will never forget being with my grandma as she died. I was 25 years old, newly married. Throughout my life, she was a wonderful grandma and an amazing witness of God's love. She also loved to laugh! Growing up, our grandparents lived several hours away. But, when we were lucky enough to join them for dinner she would bring out the giggles in all of us. Always over dessert and always just as someone was trying to swallow something! In the hospital, after she had taken her last breath, my mom leaned over and said, "Welcome home, Mom."

I'm comforted by the fact that I know she is laughing and rejoicing in her eternal home. And someday, I and all of heaven will be laughing with her.

Questions for reflection:

  • Reflect on a time that you were grieving. Did you trust that joy would one day come?
  • How do you think the joy of heaven will feel?

Prayer:

Dear God, in my times of sadness, please help me remember that you have gifted us with an amazing promise that there will soon be laughter and joy – joy that no one can take away. Amen
