Why did Jesus have to die?

In Matthew’s Christmas story, the angel tells Joseph, “You shall name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Savior? Yes! But the promises of God through the prophets did not seem to imagine God’s Messiah would die. John the Baptist asks Jesus, “Are you the one who is coming, or do we wait for another?” So, not surprising that after Jesus’ death on the cross, and his resurrection, Christians for centuries have pondered how to understand why Jesus had to die, and what difference that makes for our salvation and life today. During this Lenten season, as we journey once again toward the Cross and the Resurrection of Jesus, we will consider some of these questions and answers from scripture and the traditions of Christian preaching and teaching.
