When we were kids we sang, “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart.” Back then, joy seemed the same as happiness, but it's not. The joy that we experience as children of God is the kind of joy that is deep down in hearts. It is a joy that we experience in times of good news, beauty, and new life, but it is also a joy that we can experience in the midst of loss, challenges, and suffering. C.S. Lewis said “Joy is the serious business of Heaven.” Nature shows us this beautiful gift of joy in a seed. First we bury it, then we find a bud, soon it blooms, and eventually the garden is bursting with color - joy is peace and hope in every season.
In Isaiah 55 there is a beautiful vision of peace and joy in the kingdom of God. It says: “For you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace, the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” This summer we will watch for the gift of joy in both the highs and lows of life, and we will give thanks to God when we see all of the ways this world bursts with song. We will worship God with the “deep down in our hearts” kind of joy, as we see the trees begin to clap their hands.
This summer we’re exploring the gift of joy at Roseville Lutheran. In Worship, in Small Group Study, and in our Carryout Camp for children ages 2 - 102. We’ll share the things we’ve lost and buried, we’ll look for the potential of budding hope, we’ll celebrate individual blooms, and we’ll watch together as the garden begins to burst with color.
Carryout Camp is a new kind of summer program that still allows us to have fun, experience community, and grow in our faith - AND maintain the distancing orders we’ve been given to keep people safe and healthy. People of all ages can pick one, two or participate in all 6 weeks. Pick up your box of Carryout Camp activities box each Sunday "curbside" like all carryout fun is these days! See the registration page for more details.
Join us online for a weekly “zoom” small group study as we experience “Joy in Every Season,” starting the week of June 14th. Click here to sign up today! Each small group will meet for six weeks to reflect on the scripture passage for the week from Sunday worship. Participants will receive a copy of our “Joy in Every Season Participant Guide” that provides insight, and questions to consider throughout the week.
