The Eve of Christmas Eve

Posted by Chris Hagen on

“In those days
a decree went out…”

But babies will come despite. No king or puffed potentate or powers beyond can order birth.

The days before, Mary struggles. Lying down, sitting up, pacing floor, no position is comfortable. Sleep is short. The baby kicks her bladder and she has to quickly squat over pail.

Joseph paces helpless. They wait, hoping the baby arrives before they travel. Self-important rulers set a date to appear and they have to go, but Mary is in no condition to walk the 90 miles. She will never make it that far. They wait hoping the baby comes first. Birthing on the way will certainly be fatal. No shelter from dusty wind, no water to wash, no doula to catch the drop, robbers and thugs roaming.

Neighbors have already left. Family awaits in Bethlehem. The streets are quiet. Joseph rents a donkey ahead, just in case. They can wait no longer, they have to go. Mary big with baby jostles on bony back, each donkey step agony.

Just past our seeing, angel agents of God clear the way. Just beyond our knowing, God’s Spirit shifts stars, turns historical forces in time – and surrounds young mother and worried father with omnipotent love.

Waiting Advent,

Chris Hagen, Interim Associate Pastor
