Where Did You See God This Week?

Posted on

“Where did you see God this week?” It’s asked at the beginning of every staff meeting at RLC. Sometimes there are immediate, enthusiastic responses. Other times there is a silent pause as staffers scan their memories. Always there is some observation shared. This practice keeps us alert to the “God stories” that happen around us every day.

Two weeks ago,  enroute to a week in the Colorado mountains, Nancy and I saw God at work at the nearby table in our restaurant in Kearney, Nebraska. We sat near a young family of mom, dad, and 2 preschool daughters. The whole scene was so cute. We smiled at them numerous times during our meals. At one point the server stood by them and a conversation ensued. We overheard words like “paid in full” and “don’t worry about it.” It was obvious that somebody had paid for their supper anonymously. After the server left the parents just smiled at each other and shook their heads.

The family stayed a while longer while Nancy and I finished our meal. As we were getting our check we saw them standing at a table across the room talking and laughing with an older couple. We guessed that this couple had paid the bill and the younger family knew them…but who knows?

People are stressed and tired. Our anxiety is high. But God is active—all around us!. Nancy and I saw the evidence. It was a great week hiking, fishing, and playing in the mountains. We saw wonderful wild flowers and beautiful creeks and peaks. But amid such magnificence this simple act of generosity sticks out among my favorite memories. Opportunities to see God and share God abound—and all are blessed.

Where did you see God this week? Did you help others see God?

– Rolf Olson, Visitation Pastor

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give,
and only suffers want.
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.

- Proverbs 11:24–25
